ELOPE IN MATERA
Crafted in stones
Matera, also described by Unesco as “an outstanding example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean” is one of the most ancient cities, resting on a rocky upland in the South of Italy. A spectacular honey-stoned ensemble of little alleys, silent squares, old cave churches, and extensive views over an enchanting landscape makes Matera one of the most interesting, unusual, and memorable destinations in Italy to escape to for an intimate elopement.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Matera is truly special—with a spectacular setting, fascinating history, and excellent cuisine, it’s made even better by the undiscovered feel. The ancient neighborhoods, known as Sassi, are a series of grottos carved out of limestone, pitched over the edge of a ravine.
The community used to be a place of poverty but has recently transformed and is now home to stylish hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops which make it a truly charming place to visit for your elopement in Italy.
Matera is in a southern corner of the country and still relatively difficult to reach, which means that it still has an undiscovered air and feels original and alternative as a destination for your elopement in the south of Italy
-
Matera has a beautifully warm and temperate climate throughout the year. The perfect time to visit for your elopement is between May and October, where it will be pleasantly hot with very little rainfall.

We will send you the schedule of your day around two weeks before your elopement or intimate wedding in Matera.
Every couple's elopement timeline is different, depending on the location, season, and time of the day but generally speaking, the ceremony is usually around 20 minutes long and we will have to factor in the duration of the photoshoot.
The whole experience usually lasts a minimum of 4 hours but we recommend keeping the whole day available in case plans unexpectedly change. The best outdoor lighting happens in the two hours around sunrise and sunset, so we usually recommend that the elopement ceremony is held close to then.
-
Matera is the ideal place to combine with a visit to the neighbouring region of Apulia, in the south of Italy. The nearest airport to Matera is Bari (BRI). We will arrange a private car transfer for the day of your elopement but we recommend that you hire a car for the duration of your stay in the south of Italy.
